Jillian Hervey

The Breakthrough Act Confirming Her Place in Music and Style

Vanessa Williams’ eldest daughter, Jillian Hervey, knew that she wanted to perform from a very young age. (We mean, with a mother like Williams, how could you not?) But it wasn’t until she paired up with instrumentalist and producer Lucas Goodman that LION BABE was born. When they debuted their first single, “Treat Me Like Fire,” in 2012, LION BABE drew the attention of rapper-singer Childish Gambino, as well as Pharrell Williams, who both contributed to their tracks.

Fast-forward to 2018, and the duo just performed at Coachella and is preparing to release their second album—solidifying themselves as more than a one-hit wonder. Oh, and did we mention that Hervey is also a spokeswoman for MAC Cosmetics and Pantene? Beauty and soul. Can’t beat that.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

“Biggest accomplishment would be the fact that I am a self-sustained artist and that I get to make the music and art I want to every day.”

What does being a woman mean to you today?

“I have always loved being a woman, but I would say now it is especially exciting to see other people and women embrace and explore the many layers of what we are. Because of the way we communicate, we can really build a strength in regaining our love for the woman, celebrate our differences and embrace our intuitive power.”

What advice do you have for other women working toward their own dreams?

“Surround yourself with people who uplift you but also challenge you. Study your craft, nurture your spirit and take risks.”

“More of a book girl.”

Snack food you can’t live without?
