Ara Katz

The Serial Entrepreneur Who’s Trusting Her Gut

Ara Katz dislikes the word career. That’s fine, because it barely does justice to her impressive trajectory. A founding member of social commerce company BeachMint before becoming co-founder and CMO of mobile marketplace Spring, Katz is what we call a start-up queen. Today, she’s a co-founder and co-CEO of Seed, a science-backed microbiome company on a mission to disrupt the probiotics industry.

The three things that happened when I became a mother 2.5 years ago. Part 3/3:⠀ ⠀ 3. The birth of Seed.⠀ ⠀ I was introduced to my co-founder, @wildraja, while I was pregnant. I was awestruck by his ability to both deeply understand science and to methodically break down a product, dietary question, or piece of advice in a way that's educational (you actually learn something about your body), actionable (you understand what to do with the information) and foundational (you can build on that knowledge in the future to continue to make better choices).⠀ ⠀ For even the most curious, pregnancy is a time when you are bombarded with information, products, and decisions, and I couldn’t believe how empowering and integrated this felt. As a longtime yogi who had always struggled with reconciling intellect (head) and spirit (heart, soul), this pathway into science was enlightening. And while I had no intention of starting a new company (especially while starting a family), it was inevitable.⠀ ⠀ Months went by (many plant-based D3, omega-3, and folate drops later) and we spent more time talking about the possibilities. Raja’s passion for the microbiome, its impact on both human health and the environment, and how to set up a child for a healthy life became increasingly clear. And through the process of birth, seeding @Pax, and my struggles with breastfeeding, my entrepreneurial spirit was lit to build something with Raja, re-invent formula, and begin a new journey into the invisible world of bacteria.⠀ ⠀ Happy Mother’s Day, all. Come with us.⠀ ⠀ —@arakatz, Seed Co-Founder. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ______________⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Microveda. (2009, Oct 5). Human Breast Milk.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“The moment I knew what I didn’t want to be doing with my life was when I had a miscarriage—and pregnancy reminded me that I’ve loved biology and been passionate about health since I was in high school, maybe earlier. When I look back, it wasn’t a moment but an accumulation of moments and choices that led me here.”

What’s something you’d like people to know about you or your job that they probably don’t?

“How much time I spend talking to scientists.”

What does being a woman mean to you today?

“Recognizing, retaining and wielding your power and realizing no one can take it away from you unless you hand it to them.”

What advice do you have for other women working toward their own dreams?

“‘She didn’t always follow the recipe.’ It’s a phrase on a small wooden pin my mom gave to me just before she died. There is no one way; there is only your way.”

Snack food you can’t live without?

“I know too much about the science of nutrition to snack.”

Whom do you admire more than anyone else?

“Anyone who dedicates their life to nudging the world forward just a little bit every day.”
