The Mother Creating a More Inclusive Workplace

As the mother of two children with Down syndrome, Amy Wright wanted to create a business where people like her son and daughter could “work and shine.” She now employs more than 40 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at her coffee shop, Bitty & Beau’s Coffee in Wilmington, North Carolina. Winner of the CNN Hero of the Year Award in 2017, Wright plans to open a second location very soon in Charleston, South Carolina.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“In November 2015, while I was taking a shower, the idea of opening Bitty & Beau’s Coffee hit me like a lightning bolt.”

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

“Being mom to Lillie, Emma Grace, Beau and Bitty.”

What are you most grateful for?

“My husband, Ben, and the beautiful family we’ve built together.”

“Roll the camera and capture authentic moments—even the little ones.”
