The Comic-Turned-Chef Who’s Creating a Stir in L.A.

Alex Thomopoulos’s career combines two of our favorite things: laughter and food. The stand-up comic and culinary school grad boasts a hilarious blog (Alex T. Cooks), a highly entertaining YouTube channel and a slew of hosting gigs from MTV to Bravo. Her latest venture has been opening the Venice Beach, California, restaurant Great White to great accolades this past year. “That soul-satisfying joy you get during a meal or after a good belly-aching laugh is something I am in constant search for,” says Thomopoulos. Yeah, us too.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“At 12 years old, I realized how much I enjoyed making people laugh. I was always the clown of the family. That was also the age I started cooking. I knew I wanted to do those two things forever.”

What’s something you’d like people to know about you or your work that they probably don’t?

“The level of physical exhaustion is something you can’t prepare yourself for.”

In today’s Instagram world, how do you stay original?

“I am known for my authentic voice. I never choreograph or plan out what I will say or do, so it keeps people on their toes. I am an inherent storyteller, and I love the engagement I get to have with my audience.”

What advice do you have for other women working toward their own dreams?

“Stay strong. Be patient. Do the work.”

Snack food you can’t live without?

“It’s crazy, but any type of vegetable dipped in Vietnamese nuoc cham. I love Southeast Asian food!”

Whom do you admire more than anyone else?

“Bourdain.”
