Just when you thought the only problem in Westeros after Arya's badass elimination of the Night King was psychotic Queen Cersei, the Game of Thrones showrunners had to go and squish all our hopes and dreams just like the Mountain did with Oberyn's head.
D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (who had a surprise cameo in last Sunday's episode four) went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the Thursday before the fourth episode premiered to chat about the series (which—say it ain't Snow!—only has two episodes left!). One question that Kimmel had to ask: Were the Army of the Dead and the threat of the White Walkers (the biggest antagonist of the entire show since it began) really gone?
"A couple of questions—I don't know if you'll be able to answer them," Kimmel said to the showrunners. "Are we for sure done with the White Walkers?"
After what seemed like an eternity of silence, but was really only a few seconds, Benioff replied, "We're not gonna answer that." For the rest of the questions (about whether Bran knew Arya would kill the Night King, about if someone will sit on the throne by the end), Weiss responded with a pretty deliberate-sounding "possibly."
So does a non-answer have more weight than a flat-out denial? We're shaking if so.
One Reddit theory posits that Cersei's henchman, the Mountain, who is an undead zombie-being himself, could be the next Night King. Another, posted by ColdBeing, posits that Three-Eyed Raven Bran actually cut a deal with the Night King to save everyone, which is why he was warged into the ravens for so long.
Whatever the case, we, like Jon Snow, know nothing—save for the fact that the show sure does love its shocking surprise twists.
