‘Walking Dead’ Showrunner Reveals Major Clues We Missed Leading Up to Season 9, Episode 3
Jackson Lee Davis/AMC

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

If you watched last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, then you’re probably well aware that things are getting real dark, real fast. And now, showrunner Angela Kang is dishing on the chain of events that led to last night’s brutal ending, and we can’t believe we didn’t see it coming.

Here’s what you need to know: Season nine, episode three, titled “Warning Signs,” introduced us to an entirely different Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Daryl (Norman Reedus). When they discover Cyndie (Sydney Park) and the Oceansiders are behind the Saviors murders, they let them finish like it’s no big deal. To top it off, the episode concludes with Maggie and Daryl going to finish off Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

So, why are they heading down such a dark path? According to Kang’s interview with Entertainment Weekly, it’s been brewing since the beginning of the season. “We really thought of this like a chain of dominoes,” she said. “Somebody has tipped the first domino, and everything starts to fall from there, except you don’t even realize it in the moment that that’s what’s happened.”

The showrunner went on to explain the clues we missed, adding, “If you go back and look at episode one, there’s the scene between Cyndie and Daryl in the museum where she’s thinking about her brother in this really odd moment where they’re looking at a canoe. It’s this innocent thing, and hopefully it plays in the moment almost like it’s more about Daryl and his grief over the people he’s lost over time, because we know him more.”

Kang also teased how Oceanside will come into play. “So, Oceanside, they’re gonna fall in line in some ways, even though they are a very strong society of their own,” she continued. “They just figured here are the rules of the new world and we’re gonna play ball, lest anything happen to us. And when Maggie goes her own way and does something which is not what Rick wants, that is a signal to her.”

Is Maggie responsible for Rick’s impending death? Guess we’ll have to wait until The Walking Dead returns Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
