Viola Davis Truly Embodies Michelle Obama in New ‘The First Lady’ Trailer

Make way for the First Lady.

Viola Davis transforms into the former first lady, Michelle Obama, in the new trailer for Showtime’s anthology series, The First Lady.

The new two-minute trailer starts with Michelle having a deep conversation with her husband, Barack Obama (played by O-T Fagbenle). While sitting in their living room, she tells him, “In four years, I don’t want to look back and think, ‘What did I become living in that house?’”

Then, we see flashes of her life during Barack’s presidency. In one scene, she objects to being turned into a “Black Martha Stewart.” Instead, she wants to take on the role in her own way. “I will pick my team [and] choose my causes, understood?” she says.

Michelle’s story will not be the only one featured on the show. The 10-episode series will also focus on former first ladies Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). The storyline will give viewers a glimpse into the women’s lives as they reside in the White House.

The First Lady is set to premiere on April 17. Also, the series will feature stars like Dakota Fanning (Susan Ford), Lexi Underwood (Malia Obama), Kristine Froseth (a young Betty Ford), Charlie Plummer (a young Franklin D. Roosevelt) and Lily Rabe (Lorena “Hick” Hickock).

Back in November, Davis sat down with Entertainment Weekly and recounted her preparation process for the role. She revealed that she personally talked to Michelle, read her memoir Becoming and watched her Netflix documentary to fully embody the former first lady.

“I feel very protective of Michelle,” she said. “It’s our job as actors not to judge whoever we are portraying, but I ended up thinking she’s just dope.”

From the trailer alone, we can already tell Viola is going to give an unforgettable performance.
