Forget the 'This Is Us' Wedding Flash Forward. What About That Uncle Nicky Twist?

*Warning, spoilers ahead*

In true This Is Us fashion, the season 5 finale left us with a huge cliffhanger. No, we're not talking about the flash-forward with Kate (Chrissy Metz) in a wedding dress (RIP Katoby). We're talking about another wedding: that of season 5 favorite, Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne).

Ahead of season 5's premiere, Griffin got candid about Uncle Nicky's upcoming journey, revealing it would focus on a love story for the once recluse uncle. We saw as a shy Nicky grew closer to his co-worker at the animal clinic, Sally Brooks (Genevieve Angelson) in episode 11, 'One Small Step'. Ultimately, the romance ended when Nicky, feeling insecure that he would not fit in in the California scene, stood up Sally rather than driving cross country together. Nicky ended up getting drafted into the Vietnam War, leaving Sally and his former life behind.

Flash forward to last week's episode and we see Nicky secretly searching for Sally Brooks (gasp!). Was he successful in his search to find his long-lost love? The season finale would suggest yes as he tells Kevin (Justin Hartley) that "the wife" is looking for stockings in the flash forward. And let's not forget the wedding ring he is spotted wearing while sitting by Rebecca's (Mandy Moore) bedside.

Between taking on COVID, Kevin's canceled wedding and Randall's (Sterling K. Brown) road trip to New Orleans, our favorite thing to happen this season is seeing Uncle Nicky flourish. Whether he ends up with Sally (This Is Us writers, please make this happen) or finds love with someone else, we're just glad to finally see Uncle Nicky happy.
