Things Aren’t Looking Good for Randall & Beth in the Brand-New ‘This Is Us’ Promo

As we learned in last night’s episode of This Is Us, even the strongest relationships have rough patches. But what happens when the same fight keeps surfacing? In the case of Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth Pearson (Susan Kelechi Watson) that’s still TBD.

In season three, episode 16, titled “Don’t Take My Sunshine Away,” we watched Randall and Beth expertly navigate working two jobs and raising three kids with the help of one very over-scheduled whiteboard. It works in the beginning, but as the show progresses, Randall is late for Beth’s dance recital and she’s super tardy to a congressman dinner-party Randall asked her to attend.

There are only 24 hours in a day—no one can change that. But more than just the stress of Beth and Randall’s schedules are weighing on their marriage. As Randall proved last night, it’s also trust. That comes to a head in the episode 17 promo and it looks like their fight is far from over.

It appears next week will focus specifically on Randall and Beth’s relationship, from when they met at a freshman mixer to the precarious present. In the teaser, Beth exasperatingly says, “We’ve been having the same fight since we met,” and it seems like there’s still no solution.

Footage of their wedding and their happy faces is interspersed with a blowout fight. The effect is jarring and the juxtaposition of the couple they used to be and where they are now is compelling.

When Beth puts her foot down and says she’s not giving up what she loves, it might just be the nail in the coffin. So how will the Pearsons deal (please don’t say the d-word)?

We’ll find out when This Is Us returns for season three, episode 17 next Tuesday, March 26, at 9 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.
