*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
Season two, episode five, titled “Brothers,” begins with Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) heading out for a camping trip with the 10-year-old Pearson boys, but things aren’t quite picture-perfect. As Kevin (Parker Bates) throws insults at Randall (Lonnie Chavis), Jack desperately attempts to steady the waters but to no avail. When Kevin is sentenced to a time-out in the tent, he stumbles upon Randall’s journal and appears to be deeply touched by its contents. Cut to the two brothers roasting marshmallows together like nothing ever happened. Awww.
Meanwhile, young Kate (Mackenzie Hancsicsak) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) are prepping for their girls’ day when Rebecca receives a call from the nursing home and learns Jack’s father isn’t doing well. She leaves a message on the campground’s answering machine in an attempt to reach Jack, but she decides to head to the nursing home on her own anyway.
At the nursing home, Rebecca approaches Jack’s father, Stanley Pearson (Peter Onorati), and introduces herself. Upon realizing how confused he is to be meeting “Jack’s wife,” Rebecca turns to leave but stops herself. She turns back and says it was nice to finally meet him despite his and Jack’s rocky relationship. She ends up sitting with Stanley while waiting for Jack’s call, and the two bond over balding and growing old. (You know, small talk.)
Back in present day, Kate (Chrissy Metz) stops by Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) office and blurts out the whole I’m-eight-weeks-pregnant-and-I’m-only-telling-you-now tiny piece of information. Toby responds in the best way possible and says he couldn’t be happier to welcome a child into the world. However, Kate is quick to remind him that not only is she 37 years old and obese but also accident-prone and, therefore, fears the worst. They agree not to tell anyone until they have a little cherub as proof.
Cut to Kevin (Justin Hartley) chatting on the phone at Sophie’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) house. Although Kevin tells Sophie he was on the phone with Kate, he was actually talking to his doctor about getting his Vicodin prescription refilled...again. Later that night, Kevin appears to be hanging on by a thread as he gets ready for Sophie’s gala, downing numerous drinks and missing his moment onstage because he’s on the phone in the lobby trying to get ahold of more pain killers. Randall (Sterling K. Brown) arrives at the event with Deja (Lyric Ross) and cracks a few bad dad jokes to lighten the mood. But when Deja spots Kevin, she darts over to him and leaves her new dad hanging.
The next day, Kate peers at her sonogram photos during a meeting and half-listens to a petite girl, Madison (Caitlin Thompson), rant about her food issues. When Kate has finally had enough, she mocks Madison and snaps at her for not having “real problems.”
After the meeting, Madison confronts Kate about her accusations. After the pair exchange some harsh words, Kate and Madison get into their cars and crash them into each other (seriously). Upon realizing that really happened, Kate tells Madison she’s pregnant. Although Kate begs her not to say anything, it seems the cat may have been let out of the bag. Whoopsies.
Same time next week? You know where to find us.
