Will the ‘This Is Us’ Midseason Finale Finally Reveal the Identity of ‘Her’?
If you thought last week’s Thanksgiving episode of This Is Us was a doozy, then prepare yourself, because tonight’s must-see episode will (probably) answer all our burning questions.
The season three midseason finale airs tonight on NBC, and according to executive producer Ken Olin, it’s going to give season two, episode 14 (aka Jack’s death) a run for its money.
It all started when Olin teased tonight’s episode on Twitter, writing, “It’s a great episode that highlights our entire cast and shows what the best crew on television is capable of. Don’t miss it—people will be talking about this episode for a long time.”
Yes, there are a million unanswered questions, but one thing is for sure: Tonight’s midseason finale is going to be a game-changer, and here’s why.
We Still Don't Know Who ‘Her' Is
It’s the question that has been haunting us all: Who is this “her” character?
The question stems from a flash-forward scene in the season two finale, where old Randall (Sterling K. Brown) prepares adult Tess (Iantha Richardson) to “go see her.” Although season three teased what happens next (you know, when Randall calls Toby, who isn’t wearing a wedding ring), we still don’t know who the mystery woman is.
While my initial thought was Beth, season three is leading me to believe that Tess is the missing puzzle piece. First, Olin said tonight’s episode will highlight the entire cast—ahem, young Tess (Eris Baker), ahem. And second, Tess dropped a major bombshell in last week’s episode, revealing to Kate that she’s gay.
So, is the mysterious “her” Tess’s lover? And is it someone we already know…like Deja (Lyric Ross)?
Kate's Pregnancy = Anxiety
Sure, the most recent episodes of This Is Us have focused on Jack’s Vietnam story, but Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) IVF pregnancy is still looming. While I highly doubt the writers would make her and Toby (Chris Sullivan) suffer another miscarriage, it’s not totally implausible.
To top it off, Toby’s mental health is rapidly declining, so I wouldn’t be surprised if tonight’s story line focuses on the Pearson family finding out about his mental state. This could get interesting.
Jack's Vietnam Story Isn't Done Just Yet
Season three is slowly cluing us in to what really happened in Vietnam. Last week’s episode revealed how Jack obtained the Vietnamese woman’s famous necklace. Next up? His brother Nick’s (Michael Angarano) death.
OK, I’m not saying tonight’s episode will fully tell that story, but I do think it will feature an attack on the fishing village, putting everyone’s lives in danger. We know Jack makes it out alive, but the same can’t be said for Nicky and the Vietnamese woman. While most people are assuming they meet their maker, I’m starting to think the attack will cause enough distraction for them to escape…for good.
Guess we’ll have to wait until the season three midseason finale of This Is Us airs tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC.
