Sure, Kevin attends Sophie’s mom’s funeral and, overwhelmed, she asks him to get her out of there. We also see him saying that he feels like, for the first time in his life, he’s not running from anything. This potential foreshadowing is intercut with footage of them falling in love as children and both of them looking confused as adults. All this in conjunction with the golden head of hair in bed next to him at the end of episode 11 makes it seem like their time for happiness has finally come…but doesn’t that seem a little convenient? After all, each one of his potential fiancées is blonde.
In episode ten, Kevin briefly fell for a brunette (!) stranger named Lizzy (Sophia Bush) before learning she’s married and using him as her potential hall pass. Before the whole “I’m married” thing, it seemed like she and Kevin could really be something. But, the This Is Us writers aren’t known for their convenient and simple storylines. That’s what makes us think it may be too soon to celebrate the Kevin-Sophie rekindling. It would almost make more sense for them to throw us off one more time before giving Kevin his happy ending. Plus, co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker told Entertainment Weekly, “There’s certainly the possibility that there’s another woman down the line, too.”
Time will tell who Kevin ends up with. Until then, we’ll be patiently waiting for This Is Us to return with season four, episode 12 on Tuesday, January 28, at 9 p.m. PT/ET.
