A Reboot of ‘The Wonder Years’ Is Coming to ABC. Here’s What We Know

One of our all-time favorite ’90s coming-of-age comedies is getting a reboot (and a major makeover).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Wonder Years is returning to ABC, only this time the focus will be on a Black family in Alabama during the late 1960s (the same time period of the original show). If you didn’t know, the original series ran for a total of 115 episodes between 1988 to 1993 and followed a white middle-class family.

The reboot, which is estimated to hit small screens sometime in 2021, will be executive produced by Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, with Saladin K. Patterson (The Big Bang Theory) as the showrunner. Original series co-creator Neal Marlens is also on board as a consultant, while Fred Savage (who starred as Kevin Arnold) is set to direct and executive produce.

News of a remake might come as quite a shock to fans, considering Savage himself said that a reboot was not in the cards.

“The show was about a time in your life,” he told People in 2015. “The show was about this finite moment in your life that has a beginning and an end, and I think that’s what makes people long for that time in your life. You can’t really go back to it. You can’t all be 12 again, and that’s why that time in our life is so special and why all the memories still stay with us and warm us and haunt us and all those things—because we can’t go back to it.”

We’re not sure what changed your mind, Fred. But boy, are we excited.

‘The Crown’ Will Now Run for 6 Seasons, Instead of 5
