Nope, it’s not déjà vu.
Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey have both signed on to produce a new big-screen adaptation of The Color Purple as a musical, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Yep, this adaptation, based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker, will more closely mirror the Tony-award-winning Broadway revival instead of the original movie, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
The first movie adaptation in 1985 was directed by Spielberg and starred Winfrey as Sofia, with Whoopi Goldberg in the leading role as Celie. Quincy Jones, who produced and composed the original motion picture soundtrack, will return as producer for the new film.
