Steve Harvey messed up—again!—during the Miss Universe competition.
The 64-year-old television personality hosted last night’s 70th annual event in Israel, where Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021. Just before announcing the winner, Harvey said the wrong country due to an incorrect cue card. After catching the error, he jokingly called out producers for trying to make him look bad.
Harvey began by announcing Miss South Africa as the second runner-up, which left Miss Paraguay and Miss India as the final two standing. Then, although he meant to say Miss Paraguay, he accidentally said, “Congratulations, Portugal.”
Harvey immediately added, “They wrote Portugal on the damn sign, trying to play me—they’re trying to get me again. But I’m not going for it this year.”
The host proceeded to defend himself, saying, “They had Portugal on the damn sign. I looked dead at it. Y’all saw it. Don’t try to blame this on me this year.”
Harvey is obviously referring to his mishap at the 2015 Miss Universe competition. You know, where he accidentally announced first runner-up Miss Colombia as the winner when it was supposed to be Miss Philippines. The host endured another mix-up in 2019, when he introduced a video for Miss Malaysia but said, “Miss Philippines.”
Despite the mistake, the actual results are bound to please viewers across the globe. Sandhu is a 21-year-old actress, who made history by winning India’s first crown in 21 years. Not only is she an advocate for women’s empowerment, but she also looks up to Priyanka Chopra as a role model.
Phew, that was close, Steve.
