Genius TV Creator Shonda Rhimes Says Goodbye ABC, Hello Netflix
Shonda Rhimes, creator of Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder, is ending her 15-year relationship with ABC and heading to the greener pastures of Netflix.
According to a statement released by Netflix last night, Rhimes and the streaming giant have officially brokered a multi-year deal that will allow her to create content exclusively for Netflix. The celebrated creator and her producing partner, Betsy Beers, are taking their production company, Shondaland, over to the ’Flix within the next year.
Rhimes created many lucrative series for ABC during her time there, but her venture with Netflix will allow her to focus on a wider variety of genres and formats. While new episodes of Shondaland shows will continue to air on ABC, back seasons of the series are moving over to Netflix.
This news comes just a week after Disney (the parent company of ABC) announced its plans to go tête-à-tête with Netflix and develop its own streaming services.
We'll just go ahead and call this a checkmate. Your move, Mickey.
