In our humble opinion, Big Little Lies is practically perfect in every way. But Shailene Woodley, who plays Jane, almost made a major decision that would have switched up the show’s dynamic entirely.
The Adrift star opened up to Net-a-Porter’s digital magazine, PorterEdit, and revealed that she nearly gave up acting completely before the hit HBO show came along.
“There was a point in my life, right before Big Little Lies, where I had hit a wall with acting. I felt it was time to do something different,” Woodley explained. *Gasp*
She went on to say, “I called my agents and said, ‘Please don’t send me any more scripts; I need to explore other avenues.’ They respected me and didn’t send me anything for almost a year until Big Little Lies. I didn’t know what it was or who was involved; I just said, ‘Thanks, I’m still not interested.’”
Thankfully, her agents persisted and she “fell in love” with the script. But the tipping point was really when Laura Dern, who starred in The Fault in Our Stars with Woodley, called and encouraged her to sign on. As Woodley said, “That was really the push.”
Talk about teamwork, y’all.
