Serena Williams Shows Support for Pal Meghan Markle: ‘I Am So Proud of You for Being So Brave’

There’s no denying that Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have quite the loving and supportive friendship. We’ve seen the Duchess of Sussex cheering on her friend from the sidelines of the tennis court multiple times throughout the years. And now, Williams is speaking out in support of Markle after one of her biggest interviews to date.

On Sunday, the 39-year-old and her husband, Prince Harry, sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all conversation, titled Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special. During the interview, the couple opened up about their decision to step down as senior royals, their relationship with the media and their newly announced pregnancy. After the segment aired, the 39-year-old tennis star shared kind words and praise for her BFF on her personal Instagram page.

“Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life—and leads by example—with empathy and compassion,” Serena wrote. “She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she experienced. I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color minimize us, to break us down and demonize us,” Serena continued. “We must recognize our obligation and decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.”

“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect,” Serena concluded her message. “Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

“I am so proud of you for being so brave,” Serena captioned her post. “I know it is never easy. You are strong- both you and Harry. I love you. I adore you. Your friend S.”
