Here’s Why Serena Williams Might Skip the Olympics

We’re only a few months away from the Tokyo Olympics. However, Serena Williams is still unsure if she will be participating.

The 39-year-old tennis pro recently expressed her doubts about attending the summer games stemming primarily from the possibility of not being able to travel with Olympia Ohanian due to COVID-19 restrictions. According to the Washington Post, the Games’s organizing committee announced in March that overseas spectators are not permitted this year. Yup—that means Williams’s 3-year-old daughter and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, would not be allowed to be in the stands.

“I haven’t really thought much about that. That’s a really good question,” Williams responded when asked if she would attend without her daughter during an interview in Rome. “I haven’t spent 24 hours without her, so that kind of answers the question itself. We’re best friends.”

Turns out, that’s not the only reason Williams (who has won a total of four gold medals) may not be playing. She continued, “I think there are other reasons. I haven’t really thought much about Tokyo, because it was supposed to be last year and now it’s this year, and then there is this pandemic and there is so much to think about. Then there are the grand slams. It’s just a lot. So I have really been taking it one day at a time to a fault, and I definitely need to figure out my next moves.”

With the deadline approaching next month, we won’t have to wait long to hear her final decision.
