Now that she’s a mom herself, tennis superstar Serena Williams sees her own mother in a new light and put pen to paper to show her appreciation.
The new mom, who gave birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on September 1, wrote a heartwarming letter to her mother, Oracene Price, and it was published today on The Washington Post’s website.
“You are one of the strongest women I know,” Williams began the touching letter. The top-ranked player continued by making comparisons between her little girl and herself as a child: “She has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body.”
Williams went on to recount the backlash she experienced as a female athlete—accusations of performance-enhancing drugs to even being likened to a man—and praised her mother’s grace under scrutiny. She lauded her strength and wrote, “Thank you for being the role model I needed to endure all the hardships that I now regard as a [sic] challenges—ones that I enjoy. I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had.”
As the saying goes, like mother, like daughter, like granddaughter.
