In empowering friendship news, Selena Gomez revealed that her longtime friend, Francia Raisa, gave her a kidney.
Gomez took to Instagram this morning to give her fans a major personal health update. As part of her ongoing treatment for lupus, she underwent (and is now recovering from) a kidney transplant. The singer opened up about her recovery by sharing a photo of herself in a hospital bed alongside her bestie and donor, Raisa. She wrote in the post, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
You might recognize Raisa as the actress who played Adrian on ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She and Gomez are lifelong friends and, now, literally bound by blood.
Gomez also addressed the fact that she had stepped back from her career and kept a low profile for the past few months: “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”
Wishing Selena and Francia a happy and healthy recovery!
