One month ago, Selena Gomez revealed she underwent kidney transplant surgery and it was a success thanks to her BFF-cum-angel, Francia Raisa. Now the besties are sharing details of their emotional journey with the world.
Gomez and Raisa sat down with Today’s Savannah Guthrie and candidly discussed the super-secret kidney operation they underwent earlier this year. The “Fetish” singer explained how the journey began: “I had arthritis. My kidneys were shutting down. My mentality was just to keep going.”
But Gomez needed a kidney transplant—badly. So when she revealed the severity of her situation to her bestie, Raisa, the Grown-ish actress knew what she had to do. Raisa said, “[Gomez] goes, ‘I don’t know what to do. The list is seven to ten years long.’ And it just vomited out of me. I was like, ‘Of course I’ll get tested.’”
Cut to one day later, Francia’s test came back positive and the surgery prep began. Despite a few minor complications, Gomez feels like a new woman and credits Raisa with saving her life. “Because she did,” Gomez said. “I guess I got to the point where it was really kind of life or death.”
Gomez says she hopes their story will inspire others to follow in their footsteps. She tearfully continued, “I just really hope that we can help somebody. I don’t think what we went through is easy. I don’t think it was fun. I just hope that this inspires people to feel good to know that there [are] really good people in the world.”
