Here’s Why Will & Kate’s Engagement Announcement Had Fewer Photographers Than Harry & Meghan’s

Have you ever wondered why some royal events are more restricted to the press than others? Well, it has everything to do with the venue’s location.

During a recent episode of the Royally Obsessed podcast, photographer Samir Hussein—who has captured several memorable moments, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s iconic rain photo—chatted with hosts Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito about his experience working with the royal family.

While discussing Prince William and Kate Middleton, Hussein revealed their engagement announcement was far more private than that of Prince Harry and Markle, since it took place inside St. James’s Palace.

“The palace sort of had a list of photographers they’d invite. It really depends on the access,” he explained. “That was inside the palace, I think, so it was quite restricted.”

On the other hand, the royal family didn’t hold back when it came to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “That was out in the gardens of Kensington Palace, so slightly more room,” he said. “So, they were able to let some more photographers in. It really depends on where it’s taking place and the amount of room.”

Hussein admitted that he wasn’t all that surprised by the announcements, since “we kind of knew it would be taking place, but we didn’t know exactly when.” Still, that didn’t make them any less nerve-wracking.

“That’s one of the most highly pressured photoshoots you can do,” he continued. “It’s probably a good thing it all happens really quickly, so you don't have time to think about it. Before you know it, you’re there, and you’re getting your photos.”
