In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa discussed the upcoming third season and revealed the next mystery is inspired by the popular HBO series.
“One of my favorite things recently was the first season of True Detective, and we’re sort of telling a similar ritualistic crime that happens in Riverdale,” he said. “We jokingly call it teen detectives meets True Detective, because we find Betty [Lili Reinhart] and Jughead [Cole Sprouse] investigating this really disturbing crime that seems to speak to the very twisted history of Riverdale.”
The executive producer also talked about the highly anticipated flashback episode—where the Riverdale teens will play their parents in high school—and compared it to another nostalgic franchise: Dungeons & Dragons.
“The murder victims in the present were playing a game called Griffins & Gargoyles, which is, of course, the Riverdale version of Dungeons & Dragons,” Aguirre-Sacasa added. “Our kids discover that when their parents were in high school they also were playing this game, and there was a similar murder that happened in the past.”
Welp, the season two premiere on October 10 couldn’t come soon enough.
