Sure, Rachel Brosnahan was practically destined to play Miriam (or “Midge”) on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but her audition for the role didn’t go quite as planned.
The actress recently appeared on the cover of Modern Luxury’s Angeleno mag and revealed that she was under the weather during her audition for the five-time Emmy nominated hit Amazon series. But that didn’t stop her from impressing the producers with her ability to portray the Jewish housewife with ease. In fact, she credits her sickly state with helping her land the role.
“When you don’t feel well or you’re over-exhausted, all of your inhibitions fall away. You do some of your most fearless work because you have nothing to lose,” she said.
Brosnahan went on to discuss her minimal attire on the show and admitted that she respects her character’s classiness, adding, “I get very frustrated with gratuitous nudity; it’s tired and distracts from storytelling, but I appreciated the pilot’s relationship to nudity because I think it’s funny. It’s not about sex or being sexualized. [Midge was] hitting a bottom she couldn’t have imagined.”
And it was brilliant. Season two of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is expected to premiere later this year.
