Queen Elizabeth’s New Portrait Was Just Unveiled—& She Seems Very Pleased with the Results

Queen Elizabeth just took part in a major first of her career: a virtual portrait unveiling.

On Friday, the 94-year-old monarch paid a virtual visit to the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office to learn about the organization’s COVID-19 response and participate in the unveiling of a new work of art featuring Her Majesty.

The portrait, which depicts Elizabeth looking regal in blue, was painted by the winner of the 2018 BP Portrait Award, Miriam Escofet, and pays tribute to the queen’s contribution to British diplomacy, having visited over 100 countries throughout her reign.

“I’m glad I’ve had the chance to see it,” the royal said during the call. “I hope I’ll see it in real life one day. And if the queen's smile is any indication, she's clearly pleased with the results.

According to Buckingham Palace, the portrait will serve as a lasting tribute to the queen’s service and will be on display at the newly refurbished office of the FCO.

“It sounds as though everybody in the FCO has been doing the most incredible work,” she continued. “I must say I'm very impressed to hear about it.” Watch a clip from the full event below.

This isn’t the monarch’s first time conducting her royal engagements via Zoom. She made her virtual debut last month when she spoke with workers from the Carers Trust in honor of Carer’s Week, which highlights people across the U.K. who help those in need. Joining her daughter, Princess Anne, the queen thanked the unpaid caregivers for all of their work during these uncertain times.

Congrats on the new portrait, Elizabeth.
