Royal Family Shares 1947 Photo of Queen Elizabeth and Then-Fiancé Philip

While the world continues to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the social media account dedicated to the royal family shared a long-forgotten portrait of Elizabeth as a young princess (before she ascended the British throne) alongside her family and fiancé, Philip Mountbatten.

During the state funeral service held at Westminster Abbey on Monday, the royal family and the rest of the country said goodbye to their longest-standing monarch. The queen’s coffin was then moved to Windsor Castle, where a private burial ceremony was held and members of the family were present.

The following day, the official royal account posted a black-and-white photograph taken back in 1947. In the snapshot, we see a young Princess Elizabeth standing beside her mother, father, sister and her husband-to-be Prince Philip. The caption read, “This evening a Private Burial will take place in The King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor.”

The message continued, “The Queen will be Laid to Rest with her late husband The Duke of Edinburgh, alongside her father King George VI, mother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and sister Princess Margaret.”

Ahead of the queen’s funeral, the royal family shared one of her final portraits on the Instagram page. The photo (taken during her Platinum Jubilee this summer) showed the monarch smiling for the camera and rocking a powder blue ensemble.

Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth.
