Queen Consort Camilla Could Get Major Title Change After King Charles’s Coronation

While King Charles may be the center of the royal coronation ceremony on May 6, it will also be a big day for his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, as she will be crowned right alongside him. But according to new reports, there might be another reason that this ceremony will mark a big change for the Queen consort—because she could end up getting a major title change.

In a new report from The Daily Mail, they speculated that Bowles will simply be referred to as “Queen” instead of “Queen consort” following the coronation ceremony.

The British publication claimed that a number of “well-placed sources” revealed the impending change.

This news comes a year after the late Queen Elizabeth expressed her approval at Bowles being referred to as Queen consort. Prior to her passing in September 2022, the late monarch shared a message to Instagram, where she said, “And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

Traditionally, the term “Queen consort” is used to refer to the wife of a reigning monarch, and it usually denotes that the wife maintains the same social status as her husband. However, in the case of the British monarchy, the Queen consort is not in the line of succession, and is only given the title through marriage.

It wouldn't come as a major surprise if Buckingham Palace tried to phase out the “consort” aspect of Bowles's title, given that some publications have already started to refer to Bowles as “Queen Camilla.” However, historically, “Queen” by itself has been used to denote a monarch with political and military powers.

Guess we'll have to see if these reports turn out to be true.
