Princess Eugenie Shares a Photo of Her Scoliosis Surgery Scar: ‘Let's Be Proud of Our Scars’

Princess Eugenie is making it easier for folks to embrace their scars.

Over the weekend, Eugenie shared a photo of the scar (from a major surgery) on the top part of her back in honor of International Scoliosis Awareness Day.

She captioned the post, "Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day. I just wanted to share my scar and encourage anyone out there who's gone through something similar to share theirs with me. Let's be proud of our scars! I'd love to repost any of your images on my stories so please tag me and I will share. #internationalscoliosisawarenessday"

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine has a sideways curve. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some spine deformities continue to get more severe as children grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly." Eugenie was diagnosed when she was just 12 years old, after which she underwent corrective surgery.

This isn't the first time Eugenie has opened up about her experience with scoliosis. On International Scoliosis Awareness Day back in 2018, she shared a photo of her post-op X-rays, which show the 8-inch rods in her spine and the 1.5-inch screws in her neck she received during the eight-hour corrective surgery in 2002.

“Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day and I’m very proud to share my X Rays for the very first time,” Eugenie wrote in 2018. “I also want to honour the incredible staff at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital who work tirelessly to save lives and make people better. They made me better and I am delighted to be their patron of the Redevelopment Appeal.”

Bravo for normalizing scars.
