Princess Diana’s stylist, Sam McKnight, is opening up about how the Princess of Wales got her signature look. As it turns out, there was little to no planning involved.
McKnight recently sat down for a video interview with British Vogue and YouTube U.K. During the clip, he discussed meeting Princess Diana when he styled the young royal for her official portraits.
“The first time I met the Princess of Wales was on a shoot,” he said in the clip. “This leggy blonde comes bouncing up the stairs and sticks her hand out and introduces [herself], smiled and made us all melt, and it was Princess Diana.”
McKnight also revealed that afterward, Lady Di asked how he would style her hair if had the option to do “whatever he wanted.” He continued, “I said, 'I would cut it all off and just start again.’ It was the beginning of the '90s and it was at the time that I was doing lots of shows and covers and a lot of the girls had short hair, and we were moving from the big frou-frou '80s into the sharp, more androgynous, business chic of the '90s.”
Turns out, she was all for the idea, replying, “Well, why don't you just cut it off now?” According to McKnight, he “cut it off then, and we never looked back.”
We always knew that Diana was a beauty and fashion risk-taker. But this really proves it.
