Prince William Just Made History Like No Royal Ever Before

Prince William clearly doesn’t mess around when it comes to the environment. In fact, he just launched the biggest environmental initiative in royal history.

Called the Earthshot Prize, the program is offering $65 million to provide “solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems” over the next decade. The initiative (which we first learned about earlier this year) is the result of two years of work by the 38-year-old royal and The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The mission? Reward those who are making a difference in climate change.

According to Kensington Palace, the ambitious program will give five awards of $1.3 million each year, promoting over 50 solutions to the world’s most challenging environmental problems. Eligible recipients could be “a wide range of individuals, teams or collaborations—scientists, activists, economists, community projects, leaders, governments, banks, businesses, cities and countries.”

Nominations will officially open on November 1, followed by the first Earthshot Prize ceremony, in London, towards the end of this year. Each year following, the annual event will take place in other major cities across the globe.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio alongside Sir David Attenborough, the royal opened up about his new project, “I felt very much that there’s a lot of people wanting to do many good things for the environment and what they need is a bit of a catalyst, a bit of hope, a bit of positivity that we can actually fix what’s being presented. And I think that urgency with optimism really creates action. And so The Earthshot Prize is really about harnessing that optimism and that urgency to find solutions to some of the world’s greatest environmental problems.”

We couldn’t think of anyone better to take on such a massive task.
