Prince William Totally Fanboyed Over Meeting Joaquin Phoenix at the BAFTAs

Prince William had a totally relatable moment while meeting a major Hollywood star over the weekend.

The Duke of Cambridge attended the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards, which were held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with his wife Kate Middleton. During the event, the royal couple rubbed elbows with a handful of stars including Best Actress winner Renée Zellweger and Best Actor winner Joaquin Phoenix.

While talking to the 45-year-old actor, William admitted that he was slightly afraid and even “put off” watching Joker, but ended up loving the film. Lucky for us, the exchange was caught on video. (And don’t miss Phoenix’s curtsy).

“Lovely to meet you,” William says. “I absolutely loved the Joker. It was brilliant. I put it off and put it off before watching it, as people kept telling me ‘be careful when you choose to watch it.’ I’m glad I didn’t watch it before bed, but huge congratulations on an amazing performance.” No royal nightmares here.

The Joker star also returns praise to the duke, who gave a speech during the ceremony. “Thank you for your speech,” Phoenix says.

For the last 10 years, Prince William has been the president of BAFTA, and this year’s ceremony requested that guests rock an outfit they’ve worn in the past in the interest of sustainability. So, the 38-year-old Duchess Of Cambridge dusted off an Alexander McQueen stunner she previously wore in 2012 while William looked dapper in a black tuxedo and bow tie.

First Brad Pitt’s joke and now this convo? What a night it was for William and Kate.
