Prince Philip’s Resting Place Isn’t Permanent—Here’s Why

The royal family previously announced that Prince Philip will be laid to rest in the Royal Vault of St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. But did you know the underground burial won’t be his final resting place?

As Hello! magazine points out, the Duke of Edinburgh will eventually be moved to another location in the church at some point in the future. We don’t know when this will happen, since it will coincide with the (hopefully far distant) passing of his wife, Queen Elizabeth.

At that time, Prince Philip will be transferred to the King George VI memorial chapel, where he will lie alongside his wife of 73 years. They will be joining several members of the monarch’s family, including her sister, Princess Margaret, and her parents, King George VI and the Queen Mother.

In the meantime, Prince Philip will rest in the Royal Vault, which is located beneath St. George’s Chapel. He will be accompanied by former Kings George III, George IV and William IV, along with Queen Charlotte and her daughter, Princess Amelia.

Prince Philip’s funeral will take place on April 17, about one week after the royal family announced that Prince Philip had passed away at age 99. Here’s to hoping the royal family can find some peace during this time of mourning.
