Prince Harry Reveals ‘Where I Felt Closest to My Mother’ & Discusses ‘Soulmate’ Meghan in U.N. Speech

Prince Harry is taking a moment to admire two special women in his life.

Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, recently traveled to New York City to address the United Nations General Assembly in commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day. During his speech, the Duke of Sussex spoke candidly about his love for Africa—and how that admiration allowed him to form a deep connection with both his wife and his late mother, Princess Diana.

“For most of my life, it has been my lifeline, a place where I found peace and healing time and time again,” he said, according to People. “It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died, and where I knew I had found a soulmate in my wife.”

Throughout the years, the duke has visited the continent on several occasions. Back in 2019, Harry and Markle embarked on a ten-day tour of Africa (with their little boy Archie). Just a year prior, the royal traveled to Lesotho, Africa, to attend a new school opening. The unveiling was funded by the Sentebale charity, which he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006.

Harry went on to discuss Mandela’s impact and long-lasting legacy. “[He was] still able to see the goodness in humanity, still buoyant with a beautiful spirit that lifted everyone around,” he said. “Not because he was blind to the ugliness, the injustices of the world—no. He saw them clearly. He had lived them. But because he knew we could overcome them.”

Such a heartfelt message from the duke.
