Calling all Trekkies! A familiar face is returning to the small screen in the brand-new Star Trek series.
Over the weekend, Patrick Stewart took to Twitter to confirm that he’s reviving his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the upcoming CBS All Access show. The actor published a heartfelt letter to fans and revealed that he didn’t expect to star in the highly anticipated series, which will focus on the next chapter of Picard’s life.
“When we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” Stewart wrote. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”
Although it’s been 16 (!) years since Stewart played the Starfleet officer, he’s thrilled to revive the iconic role. “I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason—to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times,” he added. “I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”
CBS hasn’t announced any further details on a title, cast or premiere date, but we’ll consider this a prosperous start. (Sorry, had to).
