Paris Is Installing Sparkling Water Fountains, Which Means Its Officially Out-Paris-ed Itself

Parisians have a knack for making everything chicer (see: eating baguettes, wearing sailor stripes, having babies). So does it really come as any great surprise that the city is trading in humdrum public drinking fountains for those of the sparkling variety?

Project Fontaine Pétillante (which translates to “bubbly fountain”) was recently announced by Paris City Hall as a concerted effort to reduce the city's plastic water bottle waste and also, of course, to help Parisians get their eight daily glasses.

While the city has housed a handful of sparkling water fountains since 2010 (le duh), the initiative aims to roll out gratis sparkling water dispensers across all 20 of the city's neighborhoods arrondissements.

To which the rest of the world offered up a jealous eye roll—as with all things the French do more stylishly than we do. (And then copy later.)
