‘1917’ Takes Home Best Visual Effects Statuette at 2020 Oscars

These movies would be nothing without a post-production crew to bring them to life.

Tonight, the 92nd annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. During the ceremony, 1917 won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

The movie edged out Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, The Lion King and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects has been around since the first annual ceremony in 1929, though it was originally called Best Engineering Effects. Since then, it has undergone four name changes, including Special Achievement Award for Special Effects, Best Special Effects, Best Special Visual Effects and—finally—Best Visual Effects.

Previous winners include First Man, Blade Runner 2049, The Jungle Book, Ex Machina, Interstellar, Gravity, Life of Pi, Hugo, Inception, Avatar, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Golden Compass, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, King Kong, Spider-Man 2, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Gladiator.

Dennis Muren (Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) currently holds the record for the most wins in this category, with a total of eight.

Cue the standing ovation.
