‘Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)’ Receives the 2020 Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject)

This next category honors the documentaries that are under 40 minutes. (#Bless)

The 92nd annual Academy Awards took place tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. During the big event, Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) took home the Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject).

The other nominees included In the Absence, Life Overtakes Me, St. Louis Superman and Walk Run Cha-Cha. This was the only nomination by the Academy for all of these short films.

At last year’s award ceremony, Period. End of Sentence. won the Oscar for this particular category. The documentary film beat out Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat and A Night at the Garden.

Unlike the Best Documentary Feature category, Best Documentary (Short Subject) honors the films whose run times are no more than 40 minutes long. Previous winners include Period. End of Sentence., Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405, The White Helmets, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 and The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.

And even better news: We can binge-watch all the nominees without wasting an entire weekend. Congrats to all involved!
