Oscar Predictions 2023: From Michelle Yeoh to Austin Butler

Talk about a stacked category! Will Michelle Williams finally nab her Oscar after 4 previous nominations? Can Cate Blanchett pull out another Best Actress win thanks to her incredible performance in Tár? Was Ana de Armas’s stunning transformation into Marilyn Monroe enough to secure her the prize? Will dark horse Andrea Riseborough surpass all the others? While the Best Actress statuette could go to any of these stars, we think Michelle Yeoh will reign supreme, thanks to her showstopping performance as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The 60-year-old actress gave an unforgettable turn as a struggling mother who is forced to reevaluate everything when she is thrown into a multiverse and tasked with trying to save the world. Yeoh made us laugh, cry and ooh in amazement (thanks to those martial arts moves), and we think her range equally captivated the Academy.

Okay, we know the internet can’t stop talking about how Austin Butler kept his “Elvis voice” long after filming for Elvis wrapped (and he even referenced this vocal change during his Golden Globes acceptance speech), but the real reason Butler has kept audiences buzzing is due to his impressive transformation into The King. With a nod for Best Picture, Elvis is an intimate portrait that explores the musical icon like never before, and a big reason the movie works is thanks to Butler’s commitment to bringing the legend back to life. If history is any indication, we know the Oscars love awarding actors for playing famous singers (Jamie Foxx for Ray, Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody), so we're betting this is Butler’s award to lose.

PureWow Predicts:

Angela Bassett made history as the first performer to get an Oscar nomination for a role in a Marvel movie, and we think she’ll make history again as the first one to win too. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the story centers on the women of Wakanda and the different ways they process their grief following the passing of T’Challa (played by the late Chadwick Boseman). Thanks to Bassett's stirring performance as T’Challa’s mourning mother, Queen Ramonda, she received her second Oscar nod following her nomination for Best Actress in 1993 for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It. But this time around, we predict she’ll be taking home the prize.

PureWow Predicts:

In Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan portrays the sweet and somewhat goofy Waymond Wang, whose love for his family knows no bounds, and we think his charming performance will win over Oscar voters. It also helps that Quan won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, which is a strong indicator that he could take home the Academy Award as well. Plus, with this being one of his first major roles since returning to acting, it's a comeback story that we would love to see for Quan.

PureWow Predicts:

There’s a case to be made for box office blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. Meanwhile, critics adored Tár and The Banshees of Inisherin (and we know how much the Academy eats up a movie dedicated to Tinseltown, like The Fabelmans). But, out of all these celebrated films, none stuck out more than Everything Everywhere All at Once. With the most nominations of any movie at the 95th ceremony (11!), this sci-fi dramedy blended together genres unlike anything we’ve seen before, and all four of its leads (rightfully) got nods for their performances. Since its premiere last March, we haven’t been able to stop thinking about EEAAO’s complex story, eye-popping costumes, rousing score and, of course, those hot dog fingers. Everything Everywhere All at Once was a cultural moment, and we think it will take home this well-deserved win.
