Oprah Winfrey Talks Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Reuniting with the Royal Family: ‘There’s an Opportunity for Peacemaking’

It’s been over a year since Oprah Winfrey sat down with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in her bombshell CBS interview. Now that some time has passed, the former talk show host has taken time to reflect and, when asked, shared some *thoughts* on a possible reunion within the British royal family.

Winfrey attended the Toronto Film Festival to promote the new documentary Sidney (based on the late actor Sidney Poitier). The media personality sat down with Extra and was asked about Harry and Markle’s reuniting with Prince William and Kate Middleton in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s passing

When the outlet asked if there could be some reconciliation within the royal family amid the queen’s death, Winfrey responded, “I think in all families—you know, my father passed recently, this summer—and when all families come together for a common ceremony, the ritual of burying your dead, there’s an opportunity for peacemaking…and hopefully, there will be that.”

In a later appearance on CBS Mornings, Winfrey candidly spoke with her best friend Gayle King and expanded on her thoughts about the notorious tell-all interview with Harry and Markle.

Last March, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined Winfrey for a televised special titled Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special. During the television program, the royal couple touched on everything, from Markle’s mental health struggles to racial remarks regarding her son, Archie’s, skin tone.

“I was as surprised by the ‘bombshell’ as everybody else,” Winfrey explained to King. “I was doing an interview to offer them a platform to tell their story about why they left. That was my number one intention—just clarity on: ‘Why. Did. You. Leave?’”

She added, “Some of those things that were revealed in that interview came as a surprise to me—and those surprises are now referred to as bombshell. But I didn’t set out to do a bombshell interview. I set out to do an interview, have a conversation, that would allow them to tell their story.”

In the wake of the queen’s death, we remain hopeful that some reconciliation will happen within the royal family. But, only time will tell.
