First, let’s just start by saying that no matter the breed (goldens and shepherds and rescue puppies, oh my!), all dogs are superb, wonderful, kind and very good boys (or girls). But the one breed that has won the popularity contest (and America’s heart) for the 27th year in a row is the Labrador retriever.
The American Kennel Club just released its annual ranking of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. from 2017, and lovable Labs have been in first place for almost three decades. German shepherds came in second place this year, golden retrievers in third, Frenchies in fourth and bulldogs in fifth.
Whether chocolate, yellow, black or fox red, it’s easy to see why everyone loves Labs: They’re cherished for their great family social skills; ability to fetch, hunt, dive and perform service-dog duties; and an all-around playful and loyal nature.
Now if that doesn’t deserve a treat, we’ll roll over and play dead.
