We're going to come right out and say it: Milo Ventimiglia and his character, Jack, are the heart and soul of This Is Us. So, imagine our shock when Ventimiglia revealed he was far from what the show's producers originally looked for when casting the role.

The This Is Us star divulged the details of the casting blasphemy during an interview with actress Freida Pinto for Variety Studio’s Actors on Actors.

“They wanted somebody completely different,” Ventimiglia confessed. “I walked in with my beard and my long hair and set my motorcycle helmet down and they went, ‘Who is this guy?'”

Uh, they never watched Gilmore Girls or noticed his good looks, shiny hair and acting gravitas in the role of Jess Mariano, the bad boy with a heart of gold?

Socrates Ventimiglia continued, “I don’t think it was so much me choosing it as it choosing me.”

Ventimiglia and his man beard's full interview with Freida Pinto on Variety Studio’s Actors on Actors airs June 13 on PBS SoCal.
