Michelle Yeoh Almost Didn’t Take the Role in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ for *This* Reason

The Crazy Rich Asians star dazzled on the Oscars red carpet in an off-the-shoulder sequined gown by Elie Saab, but it was Michelle Yeoh’s admission to ABC that we can’t stop thinking about.

The actress revealed that she actually had hesitations about taking the role as the tough Young matriarch. Why? “I didn’t want mothers to come across as villains,” she said. The star added that she was worried about moms being portrayed as mean and nasty. (We’ve all seen that cliché too many times, amirite?) She clarified that her character acts out of love—something that any mother can surely relate to.

And it turns out that she wasn’t the only star who almost didn’t do the film. During a red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest for the 91st annual Academy Awards, Constance Wu (Rachel Chu) revealed that she almost turned down the role due to her busy schedule for Fresh Off the Boat.

Thankfully, both actresses decided to take part in the movie, and we for one can’t imagine it without them.
