Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress Designer Reveals Hidden Detail About Her Custom Gown

Just when we thought we knew all there is to know about Meghan Markle’s iconic wedding dress, Clare Waight Keller dropped yet another new detail about the design.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the fashion designer and mastermind behind Markle's custom Givenchy gown revealed that she discreetly stitched "something blue" into the fabric. And it turned out to be a special nod to Prince Harry.

In case you're unfamiliar, brides typically honor the tradition of incorporating something old, new, borrowed and blue into their weddings, which is inspired by a popular English rhyme dating back to Victorian England. For Markle's special day, Keller got creative and included a piece of blue fabric from the outfit Markle wore on her first date with Harry. She said, “We basically sewed it into the hem of the wedding dress, so she was the only one that knew that it was there. It was a little blue gingham check.”

She added, “It was the perfect personal memento that was secretly hidden inside the dress.”

Royal fans may also recall that the Duchess of Sussex briefly mentioned the secret detail in HBO’s 2018 documentary, Queen of the World. She said, “Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside—it was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.”

In addition, the couture gown included a veil featuring embroidered flowers that represented all 53 countries of the Commonwealth. Keller said, "[Meghan] felt like she was bringing an element of each of those countries down the aisle with her. So that her new role—and that bridge to the new role—was captured in what she was wearing.”

The elegant gown, which cost an estimated $265,000, had an off-the-shoulder design with long sleeves, and the aforementioned veil was secured by Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara. The finishing touch? A sleek pair of pointed-toe white heels.

Major kudos to Keller for creating one of the most iconic royal bridal looks in history.
