You Have to Read Meghan Markle’s Blog Post About Valentine’s Day

Meghan Markle might share two children—Archie (2) and Lilibet (8 months)—with her husband, Prince Harry. But that doesn’t mean she’s never lived the single-girl life.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, a thoughtful post from the duchess’s now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, has resurfaced. Spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with date night or flowers or chocolate.

In the column (which was written back in 2015, before she started dating Prince Harry), Markle shared advice for single ladies, claiming that a solo Valentine’s Day isn’t something to be ashamed of.

According to People, the Duchess of Sussex wrote, “I think you need to be your own Valentine.” Preach. The admitted “sucker for Valentine’s Day” went on to credit her former Suits co-stars, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres, for teaching her that lesson. (FYI, Markle played Rachel Zane in the USA series.)

“Last season I was chatting with my Suits sister wives, Sarah and Gina, and was in some sort of funk, bemoaning something that was so futile I don’t even remember what it was now. But I was faaaaaar from showing [myself] self-love,” she wrote. “One of them stopped me…and said, ‘Hey! That’s my friend you’re talking about. Be nice to her.’”

“They were protecting me from myself,” she added. “From my own criticism, and my own self-doubt. They were reminding me to treat myself as well as I treat those closest to me. To be my own valentine.”

See that? Love yourself first and maybe you’ll end up with a prince.
