Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s Latest Statement Gets to the Heart of Their Decision to Retire as Royals

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s latest statement regarding their resignation agreement with Queen Elizabeth is majorly telling.

Shortly after it was announced that Harry and Meghan may no longer be allowed to use the term "royal" for their website and charitable ventures, an update on their transition was posted to their website Sussexroyal.com.

On Friday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement with new details on their future plans—including a huge reason why they decided to shift their lives away from the public eye.

“The Royal Family respect and understand the wish of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to live a more independent life as a family, by removing the supposed ‘public interest’ justification for media intrusion into their lives,” part of the statement reads. “They remain a valued part of Her Majesty’s family.”

The pointed manner in which they call out the supposed 'public interest' strikes at the heart of things. The declaration emphasizes how key their anger at certain media coverage has been in their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family.

The couple also made clear in their statement that this isn’t necessarily how (or when) they wanted the details of the agreement to be revealed.

“We had hoped to be allowed to share these details with you sooner (to mitigate any confusion and subsequent misreporting), but the facts below should help provide some clarification around this transition and the steps for the future,” the opening reads. They go on to discuss the fact that the couple will continue to have security, that their digital media accounts will be getting a refresh this upcoming spring and more.

We’d say tensions seem, um, high.
