Meghan Markle Just Got a Brand-New Nickname from Team Nigeria at the Invictus Games

"Meg" is old hat

Meghan Markle, 42, was feeling the love from Team Nigeria at the 6th Invictus Games.

After the Duchess of Sussex discovered that she was 43% Nigerian from a genealogy test (which she revealed last year on her Archetypes podcast), she received a special nickname from the Nigerian Team at the 2023 Invictus Games: “Amira Ngozi Lolo.”

The brand-new moniker was discovered by Hello! magazine. The site revealed that the Nigerian team bestowed the nickname on Markle while she and Prince Harry, 38, posed for a photo in front of the Nigerian flag (and then received a plaque from the Chief of Defense).

According to the outlet: “Amira is the name of a warrior princess from a legend, while Ngozi means ‘blessed’ and Lolo means ‘royal wife.’”

This is the first year that Nigeria has participated in the games, which took place at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Invictus Games, which is an international sports event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, (both serving and veterans), included 21 nations and 500 athletes this year.

During his opening speech, Prince Harry said that his other half would be rooting for Team Nigeria. “Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home,” the duke joked. “But since my wife discovered she’s of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year.”

According to Hello!, Markle is hoping to make a visit to the country soon. Derek Cobbinah, who helped Nigeria enter in the 2023 games, shared: “[Meghan] said she couldn't wait to visit Nigeria for her mum and the kids.” He added that the duchess was “deeply touched” by the team’s nickname.

“Meg,” “Tungsten” and now “Amira Ngozi Lolo.” Call her the duchess of nicknames.
