The Hidden Message Behind Meghan Markle’s Latest Blue Outfit

Meghan Markle wore royal blue during a rare public appearance. (And no, her “royal” color scheme has nothing to do with her departure from London.)

Earlier today, the Duchess of Sussex gave a virtual keynote speech at the U.N. Foundation’s 2020 Girl Up Leadership Summit. Markle wore a high-neck blue dress that might seem like a reference to the royal family—but in reality, it’s actually a nod to the United Nations.

You see, the U.N.’s official colors are white and blue. The organization chose them because they’re the opposite of red, which is the color of war. Although we don’t know if Markle’s outfit choice was coincidental, we wouldn’t be surprised if she purposely wore blue to signify unity.

During the speech, Markle encouraged women to be the voice of the next generation. “They know that all of you, at a younger age than any modern comparison, are setting the tone for an equitable humanity. Not figuratively, literally. This is a humanity that desperately needs you. To push it, to push us, forcefully in a more inclusive, more just, and more empathetic direction. To not only frame the debate but be in charge of the debate—on racial justice, gender, climate change, mental health and well-being, on civic engagement, on public service, on so much more. That’s the work you’re already out there doing.”

The duchess also shared advice on how to support others during these tough times, adding, “We are not meant to be breaking each other down; we are meant to be building each other up. So, use your voice both on and offline to do just that—build each other up, support each other.”

The speech marks Markle’s first major event since she and Prince Harry stepped down as senior royals.

One thing’s for sure: Blue is definitely her color.
