As evidenced by her Instagram account, future royal Meghan Markle is totally a dog person. But it was another one of our favorite celebs who gave her the push she needed to take the plunge.
Markle told Best Health back in May 2016 that she was in an animal shelter debating whether to adopt her first dog, Bogart, when Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi came in and asked Markle if the dog she had her eye on was hers. “And I said, ‘No,’ and she’s like, ‘You have to take that dog.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m deciding.’ And she’s like, ‘Rescue the dog!’” Markle said.
Markle did end up adopting the dog because, in her words, Ellen told her to. “It’s sort of like if Oprah tells you to do something,” she said. “I’m sitting there holding him and she’s like, ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like, ‘You’re taking the dog home.’”
For her part, DeGeneres admitted on her show that while she doesn’t quite remember the incident, she does have another request: “Meghan, if you’re watching, I have something else to tell you: Invite me to that wedding,” she said. “I want to go.”
Hey, Ellen, can we be your plus one if Portia’s busy?
