Mattel Just Introduced the First Hijab-Wearing Barbie, and Its Inspired by This Groundbreaking Woman

No lie: Playing with Barbies was definitely one of our favorite pastimes as kids. (OK, we still take them out once in a while.) We’re kind of Barbie’s biggest fan, and now we have another reason to love the plastic doll even more.

Mattel just announced its newest Shero Barbie (the company’s campaign to honor female heroes—or “sheroes”—includes trailblazing women like Ava DuVernay, Ashley Graham, Gabby Douglas and Misty Copeland), and it’s none other than Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad. You may remember the new Barbie inspiration from when, in 2016, she became the first woman to wear a hijab during the Olympic Games.

The toy version of Muhammad will be available in tiny plastic form (complete with a mini fencing uniform and matching white hijab...yasss) in 2018. One small-plastic-shoe-clad step for Barbie; one giant leap for mankind.
